Israel's people have been the center of conflict since time in memorial. There has been an Israel War in almost every decade since its independence. Even after all the wars and conflicts Israel's future is still uncertain and unsafe.
The Israel War of 1948 - 1949
Israel's independence in May of 1948 triggered its first war. This war was a full scale conflict between the Arabs and the Jews. As independence was declared, Arabs from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Iraq marched into the country. The Egyptians managed to conquer territory in the south of Israel while the Jordanians conquered and took over the Old City of Jerusalem.
The United Nations managed to get a truce for a short period. However, this Israel War was far from over. Sporadic fighting continued till the end of the year and a cease fire was called in January of 1949. The war lead to a large amount of Palestinian refugee camps around Israel's borders.
The Israel War of 1956 - The Campaign of Sinai
After Israel's war in 1949 the UN enforced a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Arabs. This truce however was constantly violated. Soon there was a division in the support of the world powers. Israel found the United States, France and Great Britain on its side while the Soviet Union backed the Arabs. As tension between the nations mounted Israel began to believe that the Arab nations were getting ready for war. When Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal this notion was compounded. Israel struck the peninsula of Sinai on the 2nd of October 1956. This invasion had the help of both the British and the French. A cease fire by the UN eventually came into being but this happened only after Israel had managed to capture the Sharm el Sheikh and the Gaza strip.
The Israel War of Six Days in 1967
After a few years of peace, tension started mounting in the region once again. In the year 1967, the then President Nasser requested that UN forces be removed from their soil. When this happened he began to move troops in Sinai and shut down the Gulf of Aqaba which led to Israel. Israel did not have any UN force on its soil and therefore it started mobilizing troops. When tensions mounted Israel's army launched an attack. They gained control of the Sinai Peninsula in 3 days and other areas with it. This war lasted 6 days.
The Israel War of 1973 better known as the Yom Kippur War
During the year of 1973, the Arabs believed that attention was not being given to their grievances where Israel was concerned and therefore they prepared for war. On the 6th of October 1973 Egypt attacked Israel. This was also a holy day for the Jews, Yom Kipper. Israel's army took several days to get mobilized as they were caught completely off guard. Israel's army did manage to force the Egyptians and Syrians back and establish itself on the west side of the Suez Canal. This Israel War ended in the clearing of the Suez Canal and the signing of the accords of Camp David.
The Israel War of 1982
Israel was attacked again in 1978 by Palestinian Guerrillas. Israel's reaction to this was to send troops to protect its borders. Following this there was a peacekeeping force set up by the UN in that area. However Israel's army launched a huge attack to destroy all the bases of the PLO in 1982. This Israel war ended with the PLO evacuating Beirut and going to different Arab countries. However Israel still has a buffer zone manned by police at the north of the border.
